Contend for the truth

Anything worth having is worth fighting for.

We know this in so many areas of life—whether it’s health, relationships, or goals we’ve set for ourselves. Why would we think that faith, with all its promises and benefits, would come without a struggle?

To contend means to struggle in order to overcome. Jude reminds us that we are called, loved, and kept by God through Jesus Christ.

“Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,to those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.”Jude 1:1-2 (NIV)

Our faith is a treasure given by God, but there are forces—false teachers, lies, even the pull of our own sinful desires—that would steal that treasure if we let them.

“Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.” Jude 1:3 (NIV)

We contend for our faith because it is under attack. The world, the enemy, and even cultural trends can distort and dilute truth, making it seem relative, situational, or selective. But if it is not the whole truth, then it is false.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 (NIV)

In the Old Testament, Joshua and Caleb contended for the Promised Land when others gave in to fear. We, too, must press forward and hold fast to God’s promises, even when the fight is hard and unpopular.

We live in a world that values buzzwords like “authenticity,” “community,” and “transparency.” But without uncompromised truth, none of those things are possible in the way God intends. The truth matters—because it is the foundation for freedom, life, and lasting peace.

We live in a world that values buzzwords like “authenticity,” “community,” and “transparency.” But without uncompromised truth, none of those things are possible in the way God intends. The truth matters—because it is the foundation for freedom, life, and lasting peace.

The good news is we don’t contend alone.

God Himself strengthens, equips, and keeps us.

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” Jude 1:24–25 (NIV)

God’s truth is absolutely worth fighting for. Let’s contend for it with courage, faith, and joy.
