Hidden blessings

Don't grow weary in praying for the next generation. God is able to accomplish more in a short time than we could imagine in a lifetime. The same God who changes hearts, redirects lives, and raises up faithful followers is still at work today.

In Mark 4, Jesus spent the day teaching the crowds before telling His disciples it was time to cross to the other side of the lake.

“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’”
Mark 4:35 (NIV)

The disciples were exactly where Jesus had told them to be. They were walking in obedience, following His direction, and yet they still found themselves in the middle of a storm. Sometimes we assume that difficulty means we’ve missed God's will.

This is an important reminder for all of us: obedience does not exempt us from storms.

The disciples' response to the storm stands in contrast to Jonah's. Jonah encountered a storm because he was running from God's instruction. The disciples encountered a storm while following it. Yet both stories reveal the same truth: God remains sovereign over the storm.

As the wind raged and the waves crashed over the boat, the disciples became terrified.

“Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’” Mark 4:38 (NIV)

Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep. Not because He was unaware or indifferent. Jesus rested because He knew what the disciples did not yet understand: the storm was never outside His control.

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” Mark 4:39 (NIV)

The same voice that called creation into existence spoke to the wind and waves, and they obeyed. No storm can drown out the voice of Jesus. No raging wind is stronger than His command.

The disciples learned something about Jesus in that storm they couldn’t have learned on a calm day.

“They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’” Mark 4:41 (NIV)

Sometimes the hidden blessing of a storm is not the storm ending. Sometimes it’s the deeper revelation of who Jesus is. He controls the storm clouds and the drought. He controls the rain and the floods.

He’s not shaken by what shakes us.

And when the storms of life come, we can remember that the One in the boat is greater than the storm around it.

So keep praying. Keep believing. Keep trusting God for your children, your grandchildren, and the generations that will come after you. The same Jesus who spoke peace over the sea is still speaking today.

What feels overwhelming to us remains fully under His authority. The storm may be loud, but His voice is louder.
